A living room has to work harder than almost any other space in the home. It is where people relax, entertain, recharge, and spend real everyday time. When I design living rooms, I look for ways to create comfort without clutter, style without stiffness, and a layout that naturally supports the way you live. Even small changes in furniture placement, lighting, or texture can shift the entire energy of the room.
I always begin with flow. A living room should feel easy to move through, not blocked by oversized sofas or awkward angles. Pulling furniture slightly off the walls gives the room more breathing space and creates a more intentional layout. If the space is compact, I often use low profile sofas, nesting tables, and slim storage to keep things feeling open.
Lighting is one of the greatest tools in a living room. I rely on a mix of floor lamps, table lamps, and wall lighting to build layers that feel soft and atmospheric. Overhead lights alone can make a room feel flat, while layered lighting brings warmth and depth, especially in the evenings.
Texture is what makes a living room feel lived in and inviting. I love incorporating woven rugs, boucle or linen upholstery, soft throws, natural wood finishes, and tactile accessories. Even in minimalist spaces, texture keeps the room from feeling cold or empty.
Colour direction comes down to the mood you want. Warm neutrals create calm, earthy tones add grounding, and deeper palettes can feel rich and cocooning. The right balance between tones, patterns, and materials helps the living room feel personal rather than staged.
Storage is essential, especially for family homes. Built in shelves, hidden media units, ottomans with storage, or slim sideboards keep visual clutter under control. When storage is approached with intention, the living room feels organised without losing character.
However the room is used, the goal is always simple. Create a space that feels comfortable, effortless to live in, and reflective of your personal style. With thoughtful decisions and the right touches, any living room can become the heart of the home.
There’s a specific hour I chase in every Afrobohemian Living Room project — half past four, when the light goes syrupy and low, and it catches the grain on a hand-carved stool sitting near the window like it was waiting for its close-up. That stool did nothing for months. Then the light hit it right,…
Beach cottage design has a remarkable ability to make life feel slower, lighter, and more connected to its surroundings. Long before coastal interiors became a design trend, these homes were valued for something far more meaningful: their ability to provide comfort without excess and beauty without formality. Whether perched beside rolling dunes, overlooking a quiet…
The most memorable coastal homes rarely announce themselves through obvious references to the sea. There are no rooms crowded with anchors, striped motifs, or decorative shells. Instead, their appeal lies in something far more subtle. They capture the feeling of coastal living through light that moves gently across textured surfaces, materials that weather beautifully over…
Some living rooms are beautiful to look at yet strangely difficult to settle into. They impress at first glance, with carefully curated furniture, statement pieces, and flawless styling, but often feel more like a showroom than a space designed for everyday life. Others have a different quality entirely. You walk in, sink into a chair,…
Sage green rarely behaves like a statement colour, and that is precisely where its strength lies. It doesn’t compete for attention or try to define a space in a single glance. Instead, it operates more like a stabilising layer, something that quietly regulates the atmosphere of a room, softening contrasts, grounding materials, and allowing other…
Japanese mid-century modern design is often reduced to an aesthetic shorthand, a look defined by low furniture, warm timber, and pared-back palettes. In practice, it runs deeper than that. At its core, it operates as a philosophy of balance, one that negotiates between stillness and warmth, restraint and expression. It is not about stripping a…
There is a particular ease to a Montauk beach house that, at first glance, feels almost accidental. Rooms appear open, materials feel unforced, and nothing seems overly arranged. Yet when you spend time in these spaces, the logic reveals itself. Every proportion is considered, every material carries weight, and every absence is as intentional as…
Basements rarely suffer from a lack of purpose. If anything, they are often expected to do too much. Home cinema, guest room, workspace, storage, sometimes all at once. The real issue sits elsewhere: a lack of clarity, a quiet confusion in how the space is structured, lit, and experienced. I have walked into basements that…
There is a particular kind of disappointment that only reveals itself after the paint has dried. On paper, the choice felt sensible. A warm beige, a soft off-white, something that promised to sit quietly in the background and “work with everything.” Yet once it settles across four walls, the room feels oddly hollow, as if…
Neutral interiors are often treated like the easy route, the reliable fallback, the no-risk choice when colour feels daunting. On paper, that sounds sensible. In practice, it is rarely that simple. A neutral living room can be one of the hardest spaces to get right because, without a clear point of view, it can slip…
