A bedroom should feel like your personal retreat, a space that helps you recharge after long days and wake up with a clear head. When I design bedrooms, I focus on creating balance between comfort, function, and atmosphere. Even small rooms can feel calm and inviting once you get the layout, lighting, and materials working in harmony.
I encourage homeowners to start with the foundations. A well chosen bed frame, supportive mattress, and soft layered textiles instantly shift the energy of a room. From there, lighting becomes the quiet hero. I use a mix of warm bedside lamps, subtle wall sconces, and low level accent lighting to soften edges and create that cosy evening glow. Storage plays a huge part too. Built in wardrobes, under bed drawers, or slimline nightstands keep the space tidy and help the room breathe.
Colour direction sets the mood. Some bedrooms come alive with earthy neutrals, while others thrive with soft blues, sage greens, or a deep moody palette. I always weave in texture through throws, rugs, tufted cushions, linen bedding, or upholstered headboards because texture is what makes a bedroom feel lived in rather than staged.
Whether you are refreshing a compact guest room or reworking the master suite, the goal is always the same. Create a bedroom that supports rest, feels effortless to live in, and reflects your personal rhythm. With the right decisions, even modest spaces can feel like a private sanctuary.
Cast your mind back to the first Halloween you can remember. Perhaps it was a torch beam bobbing along a dark pavement, a carved pumpkin flickering on a doorstep, or a bedsheet with two eyeholes cut out of it. Whatever the picture, it probably came with a feeling: that delicious shiver of being a little…
Quick answer: Terracotta is a warm, clay-based colour that sits between brick red, burnt orange and dusty brown. It works in almost every room, including small and north-facing ones, because its warm undertone reads as cosy rather than cramped. Genuine terracotta tile needs sealing and resealing every one to three years; paint, fabric and pottery…
Hot pink has a reputation problem it doesn’t deserve. Say the words out loud and most people picture a teenager’s bedroom circa 2004, all glitter and gloss. Walk into a well-dressed London townhouse or a Copenhagen apartment today, though, and you’ll find hot pink doing something far more grown-up: grounding a scheme, sharpening a neutral…
There is a particular kind of kitchen that stops you mid-scroll. Marble worktop worn soft at the edges, a bowl of lemons doing absolutely nothing except looking beautiful, copper pots hanging within arm’s reach of a stove that has clearly cooked a thousand family dinners. You know the one. It belongs to Diane Keaton in…
There’s a particular kind of California Coastal Interior that photographs quietly and lives loudly. Nothing shouts at you from the doorway. No anchors on the wall, no rope-wrapped mirrors, no navy-and-white stripes marching across every cushion. And yet the moment you’re inside, something in your shoulders drops half an inch. That’s California coastal interior design…
I once had a client in Chichester whose bedroom I’d talked her into painting a soft blush pink, and by nine o’clock the following morning she rang me sounding rather betrayed. The wall she’d fallen for in the shop looked, in her words, “a bit plasters and bandages.” She wasn’t wrong. Her room faces due…
The late-October light does something no lightbulb ever quite manages. It comes in low and amber through a linen curtain around four in the afternoon, catches the weave of a knit throw, and turns an ordinary bedroom into something that feels lived-in rather than styled. I remember standing in a client’s bedroom in Portland a…
A few years back, I walked into a client’s guest bedroom in Austin carrying a single tile sample a hand-painted talavera piece, cobalt and ochre, chipped slightly at one corner from the trip over. The room, until that morning, was a study in beige restraint: safe walls, safe linens, safe everything. My client picked up…
There is something quietly satisfying about coming home on a warm summer evening, sliding open the balcony door, and stepping into a space that instantly encourages you to slow down. Even the Small Balcony Decor can feel surprisingly generous when every chair, planter, lantern, and textile has been chosen with purpose. It is a reminder that…
White stucco has a way of making a townhouse feel quietly resolved. It is not dramatic in the obvious sense, nor does it rely on ornament to hold attention. Its strength lies elsewhere, in the way it catches daylight, softens hard architectural lines, and gives even a compact urban facade a sense of calm permanence….
