Dining Room

A dining room should feel like the beating heart of the home, a place where people gather, unwind, and share moments that linger long after the plates are cleared. When I design dining rooms, I always start by thinking about how the space is used day to day. Some homes need a flexible layout that works for family meals and occasional guests, while others call for something more formal with sculptural lighting and bold styling.

The table is the anchor of the entire room. I usually recommend choosing a piece that suits your lifestyle first, then building everything else around it. Round tables are brilliant for small spaces because they soften corners and keep the flow easy. Rectangular tables create structure and work well in longer rooms. The right chairs add comfort without visual heaviness, and mixing upholstered seats with wooden ones can bring depth without feeling too coordinated.

Lighting shapes the mood. A pendant over the table instantly grounds the space, but I often layer in soft wall lights or discreet floor lamps to avoid that harsh, single source brightness. Warm, low level lighting creates a relaxed atmosphere that encourages people to linger.

Materials and textures make the dining room feel lived in. I love adding tactile runners, stone or ceramic tableware, natural wood finishes, and artwork that introduces personality. Even in compact dining zones, a slim console, floating shelves, or a built in banquette can add smart storage and extra charm.

Whether it is a dedicated dining room, an open plan layout, or a small corner of the kitchen, the goal is always the same. Create a space that brings people together, feels effortless to use, and reflects your personal aesthetic. With the right choices, every meal feels a little more special.
