Walk into enough dining rooms and you start noticing the same quiet return, again and again: pink on the walls, white doing the grounding work below the rail or across the trim. It’s not a fluke of the moment. Pink and white keep finding their way back into this particular room because dining spaces ask…
Every design brief eventually arrives at the same tired standoff: do you want it to look good, or do you want to get anything done in it? I’ve sat across the table from enough clients, notebook open, coffee going cold, to know that question is the wrong one entirely. The truth, learned the hard way…
I’ve lost count of the number of clients who’ve sat at my kitchen table, laptop open, forty tabs deep into Pinterest, and said some version of the same thing: “I love the clean lines, but I don’t want it to feel like a showroom.” That’s the whole conversation, really. Mid-century modern gives a kitchen its…
Most basements don’t fail because the budget ran out. They fail because nobody in the process ever quite believed the room deserved better than it got. A few coats of magnolia, a laminate floor that photographs fine and feels like nothing underfoot, a sofa nobody chose so much as inherited from upstairs. That’s not a…
There’s a common misreading of minimalism that needs putting right before we go any further: it isn’t about having less. It’s about making what stays behind work twice as hard as it used to. A well-run boot room, the sort that greets you with calm rather than chaos, earns its keep through restraint, not absence….
You feel it before you notice it. Step into a English Country Entrance that’s been properly thought through and something in your shoulders drops half an inch the temperature’s right, there’s somewhere obvious to put your keys, and the house seems to be expecting you rather than merely tolerating your arrival. Step into one that…
There’s a house near Guildford I still think about. The clients had spent close to fifty thousand pounds getting the inside right: limewashed walls, a kitchen in warm taupe joinery, the sort of quiet you could hear. And then you’d walk up the path and meet a composite front door in a faux oak woodgrain,…
The first thing you notice isn’t the colour at all. It’s the light. I remember standing in a Victorian terrace in Bristol just after seven on a March morning, watching the sun come low through a frosted window and land on a wall painted somewhere between eucalyptus and dishwater green, and thinking: this is why…
The late-October light does something no lightbulb ever quite manages. It comes in low and amber through a linen curtain around four in the afternoon, catches the weave of a knit throw, and turns an ordinary bedroom into something that feels lived-in rather than styled. I remember standing in a client’s bedroom in Portland a…
There’s a particular hour in a whitewashed dining room, somewhere around seven in the evening, when the light stops being white and turns the colour of runny honey. It slides low across a lime-plastered wall, catches the grain of a teak table, and for about twenty minutes the whole room looks like it’s holding its…
